Hell and Back Again DVD Release and Giveaway

DVD Release Date - January 24, 2012

In 2009, U.S. Marines launched a major helicopter assault on a Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. Within hours of being dropped deep behind enemy lines, 25-year-old Sergeant Nathan Harris’s unit is attacked from all sides.
Embedded in Echo Company during the assault, photojournalist and filmmaker Danfung Dennis captures the frontline action with visceral immediacy. When Sergeant Harris returns home to North Carolina after a life-threatening injury in battle, the film evolves from stunning war reportage to the story of one man’s personal apocalypse. With the love and support of his wife, Ashley, Harris struggles to overcome the difficulties of transitioning back to civilian life. The two realities seamlessly intertwine to communicate both the extraordinary drama of war and, for a generation of soldiers, the no-less-difficult experience of returning home. An unprecedented exploration of the moving image and a film of uncommon intimacy, HELL AND BACK AGAIN comes full circle as it lays bare the true cost of war.

I have not seen this docudrama yet. I honestly had not even heard of it until I was emailed about it. Obviously, I'm very interested in watching it. Movies and documentary's have been made about Iraq, but Afghanistan hasn't been covered as much. My husband does this for a living. I'm interested in all aspects of it, especially since he doesn't always talk about it.  I also like the fact that the general public can get a glimpse of what the military does to help defend their freedom. So many Americans don't appreciate what is done to help protect their way of life and they need to see what these service members do.

Hell and Back Again has won awards at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the 2011 Camden International Film Festival, the Moscow Int'l Film Festival, and was nominated for multiple Cinema Eye Honors and Gotham Independent Film Awards. It was also just nominated for an Academy Award!

The DVD comes out Tuesday, January 24.

I think I would like to see this, just see what happens in it; the effects of war on the world around us.

My husband will be going there soon and like you said, they don't talk about it much. I love watching these kinds of movies. I will even pass it on to other Marines.

Sounds like something my 20 year old sons would like because they're going to college for movie making.

I want to see this movie because there are not many out their that are real life, which means they aren't messing up ranks, uniforms, calling Marines soldier, so on and so forth. AND there aren't many documentary's about Marines so I would love to own this film. I guess my husband would enjoy it too....

Great post! Interesting that I read this. I am currently working on a blog post showing the many sacrifices that we as military families make that most Americans probably don't realize. It will be compiled from a bunch of Marines. Although I want to see it, I don't need to see this, I've lived it! But having it to let outside family members get a glimpse of how strong a military family is because of these sacrifices would be right on the money.

It's a great movie to educate those who may not necessary understand the impact the war has on our men and women.
